CTI was a jazz record label whose signature sound of funky, crisp drums and lush, layered strings have made its LPs a favorite for sampling in the hiphop community.

The label had a signature look too - black gatefold jackets, glossy laminates and photography from notable shooter Pete Turner. As my first move into telling the stories of design and designers, I interviewed former CTI Art Director Bob Ciano - who did over 100 covers for the label - for Wax Poetics magazine to get insight on his design process, both inside and outside CTI.
